Herbalife vs Shakeology: Which Meal Replacement Is Better?

Herbalife vs Shakeology: Which Meal Replacement Is Better?

The quick answer

Herbalife Formula 1 and Shakeology are the two most popular meal replacement shakes on the market. They're aimed at different buyers, and the price difference is bigger than most comparison articles let on.

Herbalife Formula 1 runs roughly $1.44-$2.40 per serving depending on your membership level — 170 calories, 9g of protein with a soy base, 15+ flavors. Shakeology runs about $4.33 per serving — 160 calories, 16-17g of protein with a plant-based or whey blend, around 8 flavors.

Below is the full breakdown on nutrition, taste, cost, ingredients, and how each one actually works.

Nutrition label comparison

Most people start here, so let's start here too.

Calories and macros

  • Calories: 170 (Herbalife) vs. 160 (Shakeology)

  • Protein: 9g, or 15g with PPP (Herbalife) vs. 16g (Shakeology)

  • Total fat: 3g vs. 2g

  • Total carbs: 23g vs. 17g

  • Fiber: 3g vs. 6g

  • Sugar: 11g vs. 7g

  • Sodium: 180mg vs. 170mg

On paper, Shakeology wins on protein and fiber. But most reviews skip something obvious: almost nobody drinks Herbalife Formula 1 plain with water. The standard approach is to add a scoop of Personalized Protein Powder (PPP), which brings protein up to around 15g. Most people also use milk or almond milk instead of water.

Once you compare how people actually make these shakes — Herbalife + PPP + almond milk versus Shakeology + water or milk — the protein numbers are pretty close.

Vitamins and minerals

Both shakes work like a daily multivitamin. Herbalife Formula 1 has 21 vitamins and minerals at roughly 25-50% of daily values. Shakeology is similar.

The gap between them is small. Use either one daily and you're covering a solid chunk of micronutrient needs.

Ingredient philosophy

This is actually where the two products differ.

Shakeology leans into its "superfood" angle. The label lists camu-camu, moringa, sacha inchi, ashwagandha, and a handful of other adaptogens. It's a long list with a lot of exotic plants.

Herbalife Formula 1 is more straightforward: soy protein isolate, a standard vitamin/mineral blend, flavoring. Shorter ingredient list, more recognizable stuff.

Which is better? Depends on you. The clinical evidence for small amounts of superfoods in a single serving is thin. That doesn't mean they're harmful — it just means you're mostly paying for them on faith. If that matters to you, great. If not, you're spending extra for ingredients with uncertain benefit.

Price (this is where it gets interesting)

For most people, this ends the debate.

Cost per serving

  • Retail price: ~$48 / 30 servings (Herbalife) vs. ~$130 / 30 servings (Shakeology)

  • Cost per serving: ~$1.60 (Herbalife) vs. ~$4.33 (Shakeology)

  • With [Preferred Member discount](/preferred-member-benefits): ~$1.15-$1.44 (Herbalife) vs. N/A — coach pricing varies (Shakeology)

  • Monthly cost (1 shake/day): ~$35-48 vs. ~$130

  • Annual cost (1 shake/day): ~$420-576 vs. ~$1,560

Shakeology costs 2.5 to 3 times more per serving. Over a year, that's roughly $1,000.

Herbalife's Preferred Member program widens the gap further. A one-time $34.95 fee gets you 20-40% discounts with no monthly commitment and no autoship requirement. Shakeology goes through Beachbody coaches, and while individual pricing varies, the standard retail is $129.95 per bag.

If you plan on using these shakes for more than a couple months, the math is pretty lopsided.

What you get per dollar

For $130 — the price of one Shakeology bag — here's what you'd get through Herbalife at Preferred Member pricing:

  • 1 canister Formula 1 (~$29)

  • 1 canister Personalized Protein Powder (~$28)

  • 1 canister Herbal Tea Concentrate (~$33)

  • 1 container of Aloe Concentrate (~$24)

That's a full daily nutrition setup — shake, tea, aloe — for the same price as Shakeology shakes alone.

Flavor and taste

Flavor selection

Herbalife Formula 1 has 15+ flavors: Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla, Cookies 'n Cream, Wild Berry, Cafe Latte, Dulce de Leche, Banana Caramel, Mint Chocolate, and seasonal options.

Shakeology has about 8: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Cafe Latte, plus a few plant-based versions.

More flavors means less boredom. Boredom is why most people quit meal replacement programs.

Taste and texture

Shakeology has a thick, sometimes grainy texture from the superfood blends. Some people like the earthy flavor — it tastes "healthy" in a real way. Others find it hard to drink without blending in a lot of fruit to cover it up.

Herbalife Formula 1 blends smoother and closer to a milkshake, especially Cookies 'n Cream and Dutch Chocolate. More dessert-like, less health-food. If you've never loved the taste of "wellness" drinks, that matters.

Mixability

Herbalife Formula 1 works fine with a shaker bottle and water or milk. No blender required. Shakeology often needs a blender to avoid grittiness, particularly the plant-based versions.

If you're trying to have a shake out the door by 7am, that's a real practical difference.

How each program works

Herbalife

Two ways to buy:

  1. Retail through an independent distributor (full price)

  2. Preferred Member — one-time $34.95 fee, 20-40% off everything, no monthly commitment, no autoship

No required purchase schedule. Buy when you need to, skip when you don't. The discount starts immediately and renews annually. We covered the difference between Preferred Member and Distributor in a separate post if you want the full breakdown.

Shakeology (Beachbody/BODi)

Shakeology is sold through the Beachbody (now BODi) coach network. You sign up through a coach, and the default path usually steers you toward monthly autoship. You can cancel, but that's not how the system is set up out of the box.

Coach quality also varies a lot. Some are genuinely helpful. Others are more interested in growing their downline than helping you figure out your nutrition.

Weight loss results

Both shakes can support weight loss as meal replacements. The math is simple: swap a 500-800 calorie meal for a 170-250 calorie shake and you've created a calorie deficit.

Neither one is a shortcut. The shake that actually helps you lose weight is the one you'll drink every single day for several months.

What matters more than which brand you pick:

  • Are you replacing a meal every day, or only when you remember?

  • What are you eating the rest of the day? A shake at breakfast doesn't matter much if lunch and dinner are fast food.

  • Are you moving at all? Even walking 30 minutes daily adds up over time.

  • Do you have any accountability — a coach, a friend, a group chat?

If you're starting out with Herbalife specifically, our beginner's guide covers the whole process.

Who should choose Herbalife?

Herbalife makes more sense if the $1,000+/year price difference matters to you, if you get bored easily and want more flavor variety, if you want a simpler ingredient list, or if the idea of autoship makes you nervous. And if you like experimenting in the kitchen, Formula 1 is a good base for a lot of different recipes.

Who should choose Shakeology?

Shakeology has an argument if you want higher protein per scoop without an add-on (16g out of the bag vs. 9g, though PPP closes that gap), if the superfood and adaptogen ingredient list matters to you, or if you're already using the BODi workout platform. It's fine if the price difference doesn't bother you.

So which one?

Herbalife Formula 1 costs about a third of what Shakeology costs, tastes good, and delivers comparable nutrition when paired with PPP. The Preferred Member program takes the price down further with no strings attached.

Shakeology isn't a bad product — the superfoods are real, the protein is solid — but it's hard to justify paying three times more when the nutritional gap is modest. Unless you're specifically drawn to the Beachbody platform or the superfood angle matters to you, you're mostly paying for marketing.

The shake you'll actually stick with is the one worth buying. Lower price, more flavors, and no autoship pressure make Herbalife easier to stick with long-term.

Become a Preferred Member for just $34.95 and start saving 20-40% on every order. No monthly commitment.
